Windhunter: Met masts, ice and snow
Neither snow, ice, nor a particularly challenging mast design could stop Windhunter: their experts dismantled a mast in Finland which was originally designed to be installed and dismantled by helicopter. Thanks to a unique installation tool made by Windhunter the met mast specialist could dismantle this mast without the extremely expensive use of helicopters.
The technical challenge was the special mast design, which uses mast elements of 6 m length and 300 kg weight - twice as long and twice as heavy as usual mast elements. The customer bought this mast about three years ago from a third party company which installed the mast using a helicopter to lift the individual elements. Now Windhunter used a special climbing crane to lift the elements and lower them to the ground, with professional industrial climbers providing the necessary work at height.
Windhunter has it’s own in-house engineering team, which easily solved the technical problems and challenges of designing a special lifting tool to lift the extra-heavy and long masts elements. An even bigger challenge was the weather: a mixture of rain, snow, and ice created very demanding conditions on the site. But professional equipment, warm clothes and a hot cup of tea helped Windhunter’s installation team to conquer the Finnish winter and finish the project successfully.
